The white VW sat outside for £400... MCK 746P; born 1975. They wanted to get rid of him... Low mileage, 1200cc, very little rust. I had no money at that time but wanted to take the car home; after a few phone calls and a lot of good will we became friends... He told me his name was Boris... That was 1995...

I was rummaging through the loft (17th December 2004) and found the negatives of his restoration; they are all below...

Boris and I were good friends for four years, at the beginning he was stock, upright headlamps, big bumpers etc but after 12 months I sent him off for restoration and fitted pre 67 wings, semi decklid, sloping headlamps, popes nose [beak], small rear lights, blade bumpers and a pair of comfy seats! Not original but he looked great and was mistaken for a '65 on many occasions...

There are no pictures of his interior; he had a deep red carpet, grey velour seats and a simple white headliner. I also fitted a small leather steering wheel and bakelite gear knob.

We parted company when I changed jobs, I needed a car with window demisters etc... Some things in life you regret...

I still see Boris driving around Manchester, in fact I even considered trying to locate his owner to buy him back but reconsidered when we found Gertie on Ebay...

I should go looking for him again sometime soon to see how he is and introduce him to Gertie...

The pictures above are as I found him, stock 1975, 1200cc, upright headlamps, short engine lid and big bumpers...

Above show Boris after I stripped him down. I wire-brushed and painted the floorpan, in and out, prior to him going off to have the main body repaired and painted. There's also a shot of Boris' new bits; I fitted the same GRP wings [fenders] to Boris that I have since used on Gertie.
The resto is detailed below from strip-down to re-build. The final picture is the only one I can find of the car finished...
